About ANA

Lazos Education Fund supports the school Asociacion Nuevo Amanecer (ANA) in La Venta, Honduras. A Swiss man, Edi Fellmann, started an orphanage there in 1990 and after 10 years, frustrated with the chronic poverty and poor education in rural Honduras, started offering educational opportunities to the surrounding communities while continuing to run the orphanage (though ANA stopped accepting new orphans at that time).  Having run the orphanage’s school for years, ANA had experienced success educating kids and knew there was a great local need for affordable schooling. Free national schooling stopped at 6th grade at that time. ANA offered a couple vocational classes, then some academic classes, more vocational opportunities, and eventually a kindergarten through high school bilingual program. The school grew to over 700 students in a few short years.  ANA now runs a “private” school that attracts many families willing to pay “full” tuition.  This is not a poor school for poor kids.  It’s a quality school for ALL kids!!  Approximately half (350!) of the students are on some level of scholarship. Many pay only a symbolic fee to attend. Our fundraising efforts help with these scholarships as well as many other programs and projects within the school.
